Whether you have a puppy or an older dog, you should plan on purchasing a washable dog bed. If you’re planning on using the bed for an extended period, it’s going to get dirty because hair and grime will build upon the bed over time. While you can wash it by hand, it is much easier to simply throw it into the washer.
Not all washable dog beds are made equal, though. Some aren’t washable at all and fall apart quickly in the washing machine. Others are more durable, while quite a few are designed to withstand just about anything. We help you pick the best bed for your canine with our reviews here.
A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites
The 10 Best Washable Dog Beds — Reviews 2021
1. Frisco Rectangular Bolster Dog Bed — Best Overall
The super-soft Frisco Rectangular Bolster Dog Bed is designed for both cats and dogs. It comes in multiple sizes and includes a cushioned bolster around the edge of the bed. It is perfect for nestling. One side is lower than the other to allow your pet to enter the bed more easily, especially older pets and puppies. The bed is stuffed with polyester fiber for both durability and comfort. There is a soft faux suede covering the outside. Pets that love to snuggle into their bed particularly like this feature.
The neutral olive or brown color goes with most home décor. The bed is completely machine washable for quick and easy cleaning. The bed seems to withstand regular washing as well, so it’s most suitable for canines that make a mess often. The bed does not unzip, but all the materials are machine washable.
- Completely washable
- Multiple sizes available
- Neutral colors
- Comfortable filling with suede covering
- Sizes are a bit confusing
2. Precision Pet Products Washable Dog Bed — Best Value
If you’re looking for the best washable dog beds for the money that are also inexpensive, we recommend the Precision Pet Products Washable Dog Bed. This bed is relatively small, so it is only suitable for extremely small dogs. However, it is quite inexpensive for its quality when compared to other beds currently on the market. It can fold up easily for storage and fits inside most carriers and crates, thanks to its smaller size. The bed is insulated to help protect canines from colder conditions and keep them cool during hot spells. It is suitable for all seasons.
It is machine washable and dryer safe for quick cleaning. The whole bed is washable, not just the liner.
The non-slip dots tend to fall off, however. These can make a significant mess all over your floor. This gets better after you wash it a few times, but it can be quite annoying.
- Folds easily for storage
- Completely machine washable
3. FurHaven Orthopedic Dog Bed — Premium Choice
For those looking for the best of the best, we recommend the FurHaven Orthopedic Dog Bed. This bed is made with orthopedic materials for maximum comfort. It is particularly nice for older dogs with joint problems, as the foam is designed to be supportive. There is a plush faux fur that covers the outside for extra comfort, and the foam has an egg-crate design for better airflow. Your dog will stay cool in the summer and hot in the winter.
The side bolsters provide your pet with a comfortable spot to rest their head or snuggle into. Puppies and older dogs that like to snuggle into their bed will particularly enjoy this feature. The bolsters also provide extra support for dogs that have achy joints. The bolster is missing from one side to make it easier for dogs to enter and exit the bed.
This bed is available in four sizes and has a removable cover that is machine washable. The orthopedic foam itself isn’t machine washable, though.
- Side bolster
- Egg-crate foam design
- Washable cover
- Four sizes available
4. K&H Pet Products Elevated Dog Bed
Elevated beds like the K&H Pet Products Elevated Dog Bed are great for outside use and warmer climates. They raise the dog off the ground to help the airflow freely under them, which prevents them from getting too hot. It also keeps them off the damp ground if they are outside, which can be helpful for damp, cool mornings. Senior dogs seem to particularly like these beds, as the cold can bother their joints and cause pain.
The fabric is made out of waterproof 600 nylon and is double-stitched to withstand the elements. It can support a dog that weighs up to 150 pounds. Some assembly is required, but it is fast and doesn’t require any tools. This bed is made to be taken down and put back together easily. The cover can be wiped easily with a damp cloth, or it can be washed in a washing machine.
Because of its design, this bed is a bit loud. It also isn’t as durable as some other bed options and may not work well for more hyper canines. It can’t withstand much jumping.
- Easy assembly
- Not made to withstand jumping
5. Aspen Pet Bolster Washable Dog Bed
For smaller dogs, the Aspen Pet Bolster Washable Dog Bed may be a suitable choice. It comes with a small little pillow that dogs can use to prop their head up, as well as a bolster on three sides. The fourth side is lower to make it easy for your pooch to get in and out. The trim and sleeping surface are made with Sherpa fleece for extra comfort and durability.
There is a non-skid bottom to prevent the bed from sliding around everywhere as your dog gets in and out. The bed is filled with 100% recycled fibers, which make it completely machine washable. The whole thing can be thrown into the washing machine.
There are many colors available, though it doesn’t look like you get to choose what color you get — it’s random. This bed is not chew-proof despite the harder, non-skid bottom. The stuffing is also not evenly distributed and tends to be bunched up on one side. This bed is quite tiny, so it is only suitable for extremely small dogs.
- Machine washable
- Comes with a pillow
- Made of Sherpa fleece
- Non-skid bottom
- Not chew-proof
- Stuffing not evenly distributed
- Color randomly chosen
6. Chuckit! Travel Pillow Washable Dog Bed
The Chuckit! Travel Pillow Washable Dog Bed is designed to be a travel pillow. It can easily be folded up and taken with you, making it perfect as a travel bed to take on the road. It is breathable to keep your pet cool and dries off quickly in case it gets wet. A sack is included to carry the bed around in. It is large enough to fit most dogs and puppies, and it is machine washable.
This bed is light, which makes it easier to carry around, but it also means that you’ll need to deal with it potentially blowing away if it is windy. We do not recommend using this bed outside if it is super windy. It is also thin, so it may not be suitable for older dogs that need extra cushioning.
- Dries quickly
- Sack included for carrying
- Not suitable for older dogs
7. Armarkat Dog Pillow Washable Bed
The Armarkat Dog Pillow Washable Bed has a removable cover that is machine washable. It comes in three different sizes, starting at medium and going up to extra-large. Therefore, it isn’t suitable for smaller dogs. This bed is completely flat and made like a large pillow. It works well in crates and similar situations. It may also be suitable for dogs that don’t like bolsters.
It is made with 100% polyfil, which is comfortable and durable. It has a non-skid bottom that is also waterproof. The heavy-duty canvas is designed to withstand heavy use.
There is a plastic liner around the inside of the stuffing. When you take off the outside cover, this plastic liner tends to crack and break, which ruins the waterproof feature of this bed. There is also little stuffing for the size of the bed itself. It could be filled more.
- Removable cover
- Fits in crates
- 100% polyfil
- Waterproof liner breaks
- Little stuffing
8. Best Friends by Sheri Cozy Cuddler Covered Dog Bed
For dogs that like cozy beds, the Best Friends by Sheri Cozy Cuddler Covered Dog Bed may be a good choice. It has a cover across the top that allows pets to snuggle into it. It acts somewhat like a blanket, but it is attached to the bed. This may be particularly useful for dogs that like to hide, as the cover makes it easy for them to do so. The cover can also keep your pet warm during colder days, though they don’t have to use it if they don’t want to.
The interior is made with faux fur for comfort and extra warmth. The bolsters provide extra support and can be cuddled into. The bottom is water-resistant and dirt-resistant for extra durability. The whole bed can be thrown into the washer.
This bed is only designed for smaller dogs. Two sizes are available, but the largest size only fits dogs up to 35 pounds. The jumbo size isn’t that large despite its name. It also depends on how your dog sleeps, as dogs that stretch out may not be able to fit into this bed. It also sheds quite a bit, which can create a mess.
- Cover to allow for burrowing
- Sheds often
- Not all dogs like the outer cover
9. Brindle Waterproof Orthopedic Dog Bed
The Brindle Waterproof Orthopedic Dog Bed is a pillow-bed. It doesn’t have any bolsters and is quite simple in design. However, this may be helpful for dogs that don’t like bolsters. The bed is made with 2 inches of high-density foam for plenty of support and has memory foam on the top. This can relieve pressure points and may be particularly useful for older dogs. The inner layer is waterproof and can be taken off for a quick wash in the machine. There is a non-skid bottom as well.
However, there aren’t any replacement covers available for this bed, which is unusual given its price. Most beds of this quality have replacement covers available to help them last longer. Also, the bed sizes are small. The medium size is more like a small, while the small is very tiny. Look at the dimensions before ordering to make sure you get the correct size.
The description claims that this bed is waterproof, but it actually isn’t. There is a plastic layer, but it isn’t completely waterproof, and eventually, mold will form. The plastic over the foam needs to be thicker to prevent water from seeping into the foam.
- Non-skid bottom
- Memory foam
- No replacement covers available
- Small sizes
- Not waterproof in the long term
10. ASPCA Microtech Cuddler Dog Bed
Designed for cuddly dogs, the ASPCA Microtech Cuddler Dog Bed is great for canines that like to snuggle. It has a bolster that goes almost all around the sides, with a smaller section to help canines get back in and out of the bed as necessary. The inside is covered in a soft material for extra comfort. For easy cleaning, you can throw the whole thing into the washer. There are no covers to remove or anything of that sort. Your purchase also goes to support the ASPCA.
This bed is not chew-resistant, so it isn’t suitable for puppies in their chewing stage. The seams are not that strong, and it only takes a little bit for the inside stuffing to be revealed. The seams are also quite large, which means it’s easier for dogs to find them and chew them up. The bottom isn’t chew-resistant either.
There are multiple sizes available, but they are all quite small, so this bed may not be suitable for larger canines.
- Made of polyester fiber
- Not chew-resistant
- Weak and accessible seams
- Small sizes
Choosing a bed may seem straightforward, but there is much that goes into selecting the perfect bed for your canine. Not all beds are made equal. Some are built to last for years, while a rowdy dog may destroy one in only a few hours. It is important to know your dog’s personality and needs when choosing a bed. There isn’t a bed that is right for every single dog out there.
Just How Washable Is the Bed?
Washable can mean many different things. Some beds can simply be wiped down, which isn’t that washable at all. We included only machine-washable beds in this list. However, other beds claim to be washable, but that just means you can wipe them down with a damp cloth.
Even beds that claim to be machine washable can vary. Some have a washable cover that can be removed from the stuffing through the use of a zipper and then put into a washing machine. Others can be thrown into the washing machine entirely, filling and all. Many cannot be put in a dryer and must be hung out to dry.
If you’re looking for a bed that is machine washable, be sure it explicitly says that it is in the description.
You’d imagine that if a bed is washable, it is also waterproof. However, this isn’t always the case. Many beds have an internal foam that can’t come into contact with water. It may mold or simply crumble if it becomes saturated. Not all beds are waterproof. However, if you have a senior dog or a puppy, a waterproof bed is important. You don’t want one accident to ruin the whole bed.
Some waterproof beds have fillings that are resistant to water. These are often the ones that can be thrown into the washer without removing the cover or anything — the whole bed can just be washed.
However, others simply have a plastic liner on the inside that protects the cushion from liquid. The outer cover can be removed, and the plastic layer can be wiped off. But not all of these stay leakproof forever. The plastic liner may wear down and develop cracks, which renders the waterproofing null and void.
Dogs are often quite hard on beds. Unless you have a rare dog that gently lies on their bed, you need to ensure that your dog’s bed is made to last. Some beds are chew-proof, which means that you don’t have to worry about your dog’s teeth puncturing the bed. Most beds aren’t, though. Instead, their durability is determined by how strong their seams are.
Even if your dog doesn’t directly chew on the bed, many will jump and roll on the bed, which can easily tear poorly-made seams. Larger seams are also a target for chewing and can easily be torn apart, which will expose the inside.
The best way to determine the durability is to read reviews, as companies usually aren’t good judges of their own beds’ durability.
Generally, you can’t just go off of a bed’s generic size when choosing one for your canine. The dimensions are important. What one company calls a medium, another company may call tiny.
We recommend measuring your canine while they’re sleeping and using that as a rough estimate for bed size. You don’t need to be exact, you just want a bed that is slightly larger than what your dog needs. If you have two dogs that like to sleep together, keep that in mind when you’re choosing a dog bed that will be suitable for everyone.
How much a bed costs is often related to the quality of materials used. Extremely cheap beds are often made with poor craftsmanship and poor materials, which often leads to them breaking relatively quickly. You’ll save money in the long run if you invest in a bed that will be able to keep up with your dog for years, instead of purchasing a new bed every few months.
Of course, only you know what your budget is. There are suitable beds at all sorts of price ranges, so you’ll likely be able to find something fitting for your dog.
Most pet parents will find what they need with the Frisco Rectangular Bolster Dog Bed. This bed is completely washable and comes in an array of sizes to fit most dogs. It also comes with a comfortable filling and a suede outside for dogs that like to snuggle.
As a cheaper option, owners with smaller dogs may decide to get the Precision Pet Products Washable Dog Bed. This bed is only suitable for small dogs because there is only one size available. But it is insulated and folds up for easy storage and transportation.
Hopefully, our reviews and buyer’s guide helped you pinpoint the best bed for your canine. The question of choosing the right bed for your dog won’t have a one-size-fits-all answer. You’ll need to choose a bed that fits your specific dog the best.
