Bertie is approximately 2 years old, a Pointer Cross boy of medium size and currently in Cyprus but ready to fly to the UK as soon as a forever home is offered.
Poor Bertie was found in a small village in Cyprus, desperately seeking someone to help him as he was ill, malnourished and very weak. He was rushed to the vet where he spent a few days recovering. He was so incredibly depressed when he entered the shelter and painfully shy.
He was very fearful that someone may hurt him, not understanding that a raised hand could mean kindness and not pain.
Sadly, Bertie is yet another product of the hunting season, a dog hollowed out by his experience of living a hunting dog’s life only to be discarded once he was no longer useful. Bertie has come some way in the weeks he has been safe at the shelter.
He has put on weight, is learning to trust his caregiver and is appreciating affection and the company of the other shelter dogs.
Bertie has shown himself to have one of the sweetest and gentlest natures we’ve ever known which makes his neglect and abuse even more difficult to think about. Bertie is wonderful with all the other dogs both male and female.
He now looks forward to seeing his rescuer, appreciates regular meals and is always polite and gentle in his approach. He is still shy and that will not change overnight, but with the right people, he will flourish and blossom for sure.
We think Bertie would benefit from a home with another dog or two to help him continue gaining confidence around humans. They could help him learn house rules as no doubt he has not lived in a home before, just a filthy cage in a hunter’s yard is all he has ever known.
Bertie would be great with people who have the patience and understanding to know that with time and investment, he will make a wonderful family dog. Families with children over 10 years old would be preferable, or an active couple or single person.
No dog deserves the life that Bertie has had, and it is time for him to experience some happiness, love and security with caring humans who will cherish and adore him.
